NORTH STONINGTON, CT (WFSB) – A raccoon has been tested positive for rabies in North Stonington, according to local health authorities.
The Ledge Light Health District announced Thursday that the raccoon was found in the Wyassup Road area of North Stonington.
He was trapped and tested on Wednesday.
Health officials told people to refrain from feeding or approaching wild or stray animals.
"Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that can infect all warm-blooded animals, including humans," the district said in a press release. "It is transmitted mainly by wild animals, but stray cats and dogs can also be infected and spread the virus.The rabies virus lives in the saliva and brain tissue of infected animals, comes into contact with open wounds. , fractures of the skin or mucous membranes.
