Rachel Maddow shares an important message with her viewers after being diagnosed with skin cancer.

The MSNBC host called back during a recent episode of “The Rachel Maddow Show” that she was at a minor league baseball game with her partner, Susan Mikula, who noticed at the time that a mole on Maddow’s neck had “changed.”

“I had no idea what she was talking about,” Maddow recalls.

She said she tried to avoid him, joking that Mikula just hadn’t noticed the mole before because she was on Maddow’s left side and Maddow is driving. Maddow also speculated that the change in appearance could have been due to a “mosquito bite, sunburn or something.”

But Mikula was unwavering, insisting, “We’ve been together for 22 years. This mole has changed, ”Maddow said. Mikula then suggested that Maddow ask her hairstylist, Diane, whom she has seen for two decades.

“(Diane) immediately said, ‘Yeah, I was going to talk about it myself. That mole has changed.'”

Maddow said she decided to see a dermatologist, who took a biopsy and found it to be skin cancer. She was operated on at a New York hospital and “they got it all,” she said. Maddow was off work for a few days and now needs regular checkups.

“Susan was right, as always. I’m going to be perfectly fine,” she added.

Maddow then went on to stress to viewers the importance of getting the moles checked out. While skin cancer is the most common cancer in the world, 99 percent of cases are treatable if caught early, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

“Schedule a check-up now with your doctor,” she said. “Then when your doctor tells you you’re fine, but you should do it every year, put it on your phone’s calendar for a year from now, then come back and make that follow-up appointment.

“It was only by the grace of Susan that I found mine in enough time for it to be totally treatable, because I missed my appointments forever to get things like that checked because I assumed everything will always be fine. “
