Rage 2 review – The best game when it's brutal

At the beginning of the excellent restart of the developer id Software in 2016 Condemnjust a fraction of a second passes before you shoot devastating blows, crushing demon skulls, or ripping heart-pumping hearts into the chest cavities for no reason to repel the forces of hell. It is clear that the developers understood that in front of a long enough exhibition at the beginning of a game such as Condemn, the players reject the instruction screens and skip the dialogue – they just want to continue the slaughter.

Rage 2 It does not have such a powerful immediacy. As a creative collaboration between id Software and Avalanche Studios, the Swedish developer responsible for both the Just cause series and the open world excellent and rather underestimated of 2015 Mad Max, Rage 2 is a mutant born from the merger of two or three other franchises. In his DNA is the fight almost inducing crises Condemn coupled with the explosiveness of the open world of Just cause – augmented by the post-apocalyptic backdrop of the wastelands and the fight of vehicles of the origin Rage, itself a pastiche of the B-movie series as Mad Max.

The result is a wonderfully energetic but imperfect open-world shooter – but one that fails to explain why this is an open-world game. Yes, this is supposed to be the Earth as it would be after the norms of civilization ended under a nuclear fire, so the landscape is appropriately empty and sterile. But the development team never really gave a reason for that … large. Open world games can be rare and still offer a variety of things to do (see Fall or Red Dead Redemption 2but there are few precious things here to justify the scope. It's a specific problem that ended up hobbling the Just cause Games too – once the novelty of a game world so big that it took literally 40 minutes to go from one end to the other faded – and Avalanche can not revitalize it.

There is not much to love in the story, which is thin as a paper and full of lame dialogues. I love the sensational Condemn for his unwavering confidence – a real self-awareness around what players want from a Condemn play and a discipline that gives the thing all the true rigor in the way it is performed. Rage 2 does not have the same level of self-understanding – the above mentioned introduction is a complex set that simply does not know when to step out of your way and let you demolish your enemies.

When that's the case, though, Rage 2 is a shooter even better than Condemn. It's a game that gives you a series of weapons and abilities that are much wider and more enjoyable to experiment with – as well as a variety of open arenas where you can play. The fight is bloody and cruel, he never fears the opportunity of decapitation, while the litany of vicious weapons has his fist. Everything you do has a wonderful dynamic, with a freedom of movement loaded with speed and ferocity that makes you addicted to killing repeatedly – be it an extremely powerful combat rifle or a rifle cartridge engraved to perfection. Combine this raw firepower with special and evolving capabilities, most of which are unlocked through "arch safes" that you discover around the world and you have a truly multi-dimensional combat system. The powers allow you to traverse the battlefield at high speed, hit the ground to make your way to victory or release shockwave capabilities to literally divide your enemies in front of your eyes. All intertwined pieces sing in harmony and we feel awesome.

The fight is so well constructed that it really serves to emphasize everything that could have been done to rationalize Rage 2 in something more disciplined – not necessarily a linear shooter, but something more contained so that the superlatives heights of his wild shooter cut more systematically filling the relatively tame open world. In the current state of things, the often beautiful but empty world looks like a distraction. Driving, for example, becomes a pointless stop-time that reminds you of it: all you want to do is to shoot another mutant in the face, before punching them. bloody remains on a battlefield. As long as you are Rage 2 is a sensation race with weapons and little competition.
