A rabid bat was found Tuesday in downtown Minneapolis, and public health officials are asking to speak to anyone in physical contact with her.
The winged mammal was tested positive for rabies after a group of coworkers found it and captured near the intersection of Marquette Avenue and 6th Street. The group brought the bat to the University of Minnesota's veterinary diagnostic laboratory, which finished testing on Thursday, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.
Rabies is usually transmitted by the bite of an infected animal, but the teeth of a bat are so small that a bite may not be felt or have left an apparent mark, warned the Department of Health.
"If someone has been bitten [by] or exposed to a bat, it is very important to test the bat for rabies research, "said Carrie Klumb, senior epidemiologist and coordinator of rabies surveillance at the Department of Health. "If this is not possible, the person should receive preventive rabies vaccines as soon as possible."
Rabies is almost always fatal after the onset of symptoms.
In addition to those who handle bats, anyone who has slept in a room where a bat has been found should consult a doctor because the bat may have bitten someone while they were sleeping, officials said. health.
The Rabid Bat Marquette Avenue is the latest of several discoveries recently in Twin Cities. Early in the summer, two rabid bats were found in Minneapolis. Last year, rabid bats were found at Lake Harriet in Minneapolis and at Lake Como in St. Paul.
Although rabies is not common among bats, most human rabies exposures in this country are caused by bats, according to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The United States has two to three cases of rabies a year, but 55,000 people are receiving preventive treatment after possible exposure to rabies.
In addition to bats, rabies can be transmitted to raccoons, foxes and skunks. In Minnesota, skunks are the main vector of rabies, except in the northeast corner of the state, where bats are most likely to have rabies.
Anyone who has had physical contact with the bat found on Tuesday is encouraged to call the Department of Health at 651-201-5414 or 1-877-676-5414 to determine if rabies vaccines are needed.
