BALTIMORE – The Ravens improved to 1-1 this season with a spirited 36-35 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Week Two.
Here is their newsletter.
Offense
quarterback – Lamar Jackson put on quite a show yet and had one of the best games of his career. Jackson threw two interceptions, including a pick-six to Tyrann Mathieu in the game’s first possession. Jackson more than made up for those mistakes and put the Ravens on their backs. He completed 18 of 26 passes for 239 yards with a touchdown. Jackson also ran for 107 yards with two scores. With a 4th and a 1 with one minute remaining, Jackson ran for the first winning try. It was an incredible performance. Class A
The running backs – The Ravens’ ongoing attack is more dangerous than ever. Devonta Freeman’s first run was 31 yards. Latavius Murray (9 carries, 36 yards, 1 touchdown) brings another dimension to the Ravens’ offensive style with his punitive playstyle. Ty ‘Son Williams had 77 yards on 13 carries (5.9 ypc). Overall, the Ravens finished with 251 rushing yards and that’s usually enough to win a game. Rating: B +
Wide receivers – Marquise Brown continues to play and shows he’s a true No.1 receiver. Brown finished with 6 receptions for 113 yards with a touchdown. His course has improved, as has his ability to gain yards after a capture. Mark Andrews had five catches for 55 yards and Sammy Watkins finished with seven receptions for 44 yards. Note: A-
Offensive line – Alejandro Villanueva seems better left tackle despite some penalties. Patrick Mekari played well in the right tackle, Kevin Zeitler, Ben Powers and Bradley Bozeman also played well in the face of adversity. Jackson was sacked once. Rating: B +
Defense
Defensive line – Justin Madubuike had one of his best games. Calais Campbell had a solid game and nose tackle Brandon Williams was solid to stop the race. The Chiefs have 62 yards on 18 carries (3.4 ypc). Defensive tackle Justin Ellis also flashed. This group needs more pressure on the quarterback. Category B-
Linebackers – Rookie outside linebacker Odafe Oweh has appeared in two NFL games and had a major impact on both. He forced a key interception and pulled off a recovery fumble that directly led to the victory. Patrick Queen and Malik Harrison still need to improve their coverage. Queen also missed a few tackles. Justin Houston was solid. Category B-
Secondary – The Baltimore defense gave the Raiders 491 yards in the first week. The Ravens gave the Chiefs 405 yards. Ravens defenders don’t make key saves and it’s a challenge that needs to be addressed quickly. Baltimore also struggled to tackle in the open field. The Ravens secondary is decimated with injuries so they can make adjustments with their available players. DeShon Eliott had to leave this game with a concussion. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 24 of 31 passes for 343 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Rating: D
Special teams – Justin Tucker had a 35-yard field goal. The blanket was solid. The Ravens need to get more production from the comeback Devin Duvernay. Category B
Framing – John Harbaugh inspired his team to victory, Greg Roman had a solid game plan for the offense. Don Martindale’s defense came to a halt when the team needed it most. Note: A
