In what may well be the most captivating and difficult last round of spelling history, eight students shared the trophy for the nation 's best speller on Thursday night.

Yes, you read correctly: eight students, a trophy and many words that most people had never heard before.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee was in the third hour of the last round of 16 spell-checkers when the voice of the competition, the pronomer Jacques Bailly, admitted that they might lack words to give the students.

"Champions, we are now in unfamiliar territory," said Bailly to the packed crowd at Gaylord Convention Center, Maryland, as well as to those watching in prime time on ESPN.

"There are still many words on our list," he continued. "But we will soon run out of words that may challenge you, the most phenomenal collection of super spellers in the history of this competition."
