The delta variant of COVID-19 is burning across the United States, in some states worse than others. We here in West Virginia have been lucky so far, but it can’t go on any longer without taking precautions again.
Governor Jim Justice, at the time of this writing, has yet to reinstate mandates on masks, social distancing, or even a partial form of lockdown, such as capacity limits in stores, schools or other forms of business. If we are to mitigate the dangers of this new wave of epidemics, we must take these steps as well as get vaccinated.
To those who are complaining or have complained about the mask or vaccine warrants, give me this opportunity to urge you to shut up. If you say that we don’t need warrants because they would infringe your freedom, you are wrong.
To mask oneself and to be vaccinated is not to give up freedoms, it is a civic responsibility. Wearing a mask and getting vaccinated has the same kind of responsibility, such as not driving drunk, making sure people wear their seat belts when riding a roller coaster, or making sure that you keep your guns unloaded at all times when they are not. use and that the balls are kept out of the reach of children. This is how to wear masks and get vaccinated. It’s not like having to join the military when you’re a pacifist.
If you think it is an abuse of the government to declare warrants, you are still wrong. Vaccines against other diseases, such as polio or mumps, have been mandatory for decades.
If you think it should be the sole responsibility of a parent, say, to immunize and mask their children and the government has no say in this, believing that the government shouldn’t say how to be a parent, you would be wrong. The reason? Because bad parents exist, and government officials will have to intervene on behalf of the children. Why do you think child protection services exist?
If you mean to say we have no reason to panic because West Virginia isn’t filling its hospitals with patients and ambulances aren’t lining the streets with people infected with COVID, you’d be wrong. Again . The reason we haven’t reached the nightmarish levels that have hit Florida and Texas is not because of a lack of precaution, but because the respective governors of those states are fighting against precaution.
It’s the only good thing I can say about Gov. Justice right now: he’s not stopping or trying to punish people for taking precautions themselves. It would be better if he was leading, but at least he is keeping away rather than getting in the way.
That’s not to say West Virginia won’t be so bad. We are already making progress towards this. It’s just that we need to take more care and encourage / force others to do the same.
You don’t like this idea? Well tell me: would you run into a fire without heat resistant equipment? Would you go into shark infested waters without a protective cage? Would you walk on broken glass and not be grateful that you are wearing shoes at that time?
It’s about protection, and sometimes people need to be informed or even forced to do so. Why do you think we have laws against drunk driving or they hand out tickets if you don’t wear a seat belt? It seems painfully obvious that we shouldn’t drive drunk or buckle up, and yet people think otherwise all the time. This is basically what anti-mask and anti-vax people are today, those who stand above such life-saving precautions.
Wear masks, get vaccinated and, for Heaven’s sake, don’t take livestock medicine.
