Do not be fooled by the sweet smile and the good eyes Big little lies" Corey Brockfield: At the time when we were really hoping that he would be the well-meaning guy Jane deserves, Sunday's episode paused us – and gave us reason to believe he was not trustworthy, after all.
Of course, he is not the only resident of Monterey to have gained a little of his eyes this week. Let's go back to the events of "Kill Me" (with a note that our resident BLL the recapper, Dave Nemetz, will be back next week):
CELESTIAL | Just about every woman in the so-called Monterey Five has had a bad week – but hoo boy, Celeste is living this now. First, she and her lawyer, Katie, will meet Mary Louise, her the lawyer and the judge in charge of the case. Unsurprisingly, Mary Louise gives the kickoff with a sweet sweet compliment of Celeste: it's a good person and an even better mother! – then continues with "But she is not well", which the judge considers inappropriate before concluding the meeting.
Celeste is upset by the fact that Katie has not fought harder (or not at all) against Mary Louise in this play, but Katie insists that silence is the key to the battle for the guard: Mary Louise will try to get Celeste out of his choice. Celeste will be much better if she does not bite at the hook. Celeste ends up adopting this strategy … but she does not exactly to employ he. At the next meeting, Mary Louise's lawyer makes an offer of shared custody; Celeste will have twins on weekdays, Mary Louise will have them on weekends and Celeste will be treated for alcohol and drug addiction and anger management tips. After hearing these terms, Celeste immediately triggers an "f-k you" against her stepmother, then gets angry when Katie admits that the shared custody offer could actually be worth it to be taken.
And that's when Katie insinuates a new twist in the situation: if the case of custody is judged, it is quite possible that the death of Perry is evoked – and all Monterey Five could be questioned about this if they testify at the hearing. Celeste convenes an emergency meeting with Madeline, Renata, Bonnie and Jane and, after many discussions on how to proceed, Madeline insists that they must all "stand together", even if it means that they risk perjuring themselves. Meanwhile, Celeste is forced to reveal to her children the ongoing battle for childcare, telling them that Mary Louise wants the boys to live with her for a while. They are heartbroken at the thought of leaving their mother, and then gently assure her that they will say whatever she wants to say in their court-ordered psychiatric assessment.
RENATA | Poor Renata keeps putting notes in the "L" column this week, especially when she finds out that San Francisco Magazine no longer includes it in their "Women in Power" issue because of bankruptcy. She decides to turn her attention to Mary Louise to try to get Celeste's mother-in-law to cancel the whole battle for custody. Oh, Renata, how naive you are!
Unsurprisingly, Renata's conversation with Mary Louise is going very, very badly. She is doing her best to take over and discuss the issue of custody. But Mary Louise comes first, making all kinds of sneaky remarks about Renata's bankruptcy problems and her choice to be a working mom and spend less time with Amabella. "Do you judge my life choices?", Asks Renata, dismayed, to which Mary Louise responds: "I do not know your choices. I do not know you, "Except the observation that Renata lives" in a large house without furniture. "Ugh, this woman." (The conversation seems to remain with Renata, however, since she keeps Amabella at home a few days later so that she can go back to school, so that they can spend an afternoon mom-daughter.)
BONNIE | At the hospital, Bonnie takes a wet washcloth and cleans her mother's arms. When she holds the woman's hand for a few seconds, she begins to see some pictures of the water that her mother was viewing before the stroke. (Needless to say, she quickly drops her hand.)
Later, Bonnie's father interrupts one of the classes she teaches (singing for sleep apnea!) And insists that Bonnie's mother be transferred to another hospital because the one she is currently going to throw her into a rehab center. "Do you see yourself getting involved. Wow, Bonnie deadpans, and it's clear she's not just talking about current events. His father is angry, insisting that he made Bonnie was younger and protected her from her mother's physical abuse. But she reminds him that he simply kept the peace and defused the situation when it was necessary – it was not a protection, even if he thought so.
That night, Bonnie returns to the hospital to see her mother and Elizabeth is awake and has trouble speaking. She ends up saying two words, and Bonnie is alarmed to hear, "Kill me." (?!?!). Bonnie leaves the hospital, but she runs into something as disturbing. House. Corey, Jane's boyfriend, steps out of the police department and gets into his car, looking rather sneaky – which is not unusual for him.
JEANNE | Brian Macpherson, a punk who gets bullied at school, calls him an "error" and a "boy p," among other unsavory names. Celeste's sons are trying to end the situation by telling Brian to "leave our brother alone" (oh yes!), But Brian calls the father of the twins a rapist, and they jostle Brian against the fence of the playground. He ends up with a broken lip and a hospital stay, and he, Ziggy and the twins are all hanging out of school for three days.
Ziggy reveals to Jane that Brian had treated his father as a rapist and he wondered aloud whether he would become like his father, although Jane assures him that he could never. To cheer her up, she takes Ziggy kayaking with Celeste and the twins during one of their days of suspension, and Corey is also present, playing with the kids as a true father figure. Earlier in the hour, however, Jane and Corey had their own problem: they chatted a bit and started undressing, but a few seconds later, Jane begged Corey to "touch me, please." She burst into tears, causing the action. to a quick end. Corey was very nice to all this – but her visit to the police department makes me wonder if Jane dodged a bullet while not sleeping with him. (I would really like to believe he was there for a totally different reason – theorize in the comments!)
MADELINE | Finally, Sunday's episode further delves into the marital woes of Madeline and Ed, starting with their long-awaited visit to a "healing institute" in Big Sur. Madeline encourages Ed to be open-minded, but it turns out that retirement is a bust, full of equestrian exercises like walking in a circle (um, sorry, "explore" the space ") and hugging each other. . Pass!
On the way back, Ed finally opens up to his wife, revealing that their first appointment was like a job interview for the post of "father figure" of the first daughter of Madeline. He insists that it has always been a "wise and practical choice" for Madeline. And he was cool with that. Until she got along with Joseph Bachman, leaving Ed the "toughest choice of all: going out with my dignity or staying with a woman I just can not have." trust". In response, Madeline gives her own monologue. unable to explain why she makes such self-destructive choices; however, she gives her word to Ed that her next mistake will not be an infidelity. "All my mistakes will be all new," she says, and he seems a little more convinced than he has been over the past two weeks. (Side note: Big little lies seems to be the rare sight where children actors make scenes better, no? Later in this episode, Chloe finds Ed cutting vegetables at the kitchen counter. She smiles back to normal, then takes him in her arms. He takes her in his arms and cries. and I'm verklempt, OK ?!)
But it seems that the problems of Madeline and Ed are not completely behind them. At the end of the hour, Ed goes to a bar where he is suddenly joined by Tori Bachman, Joseph's wife. She pulls clumsily (or flirt, I guess) at Ed's jacket collar and strokes her shoulder – but then she looks critically at the corner of the bar and Ed turns to find Joseph sitting at a table. next table, watching them both.
