If you want to recycle a television, computer, or other type of electronic device at the transfer station, this is the week to do so.
The site will close on September 27, and when it reopens on October 4, there will be no electronics recycling at this location.
Operated by Lycoming County Resource Management Services, the transfer station will be temporarily closed for the installation of a new conveyor system. During the shutdown, waste and recyclables may be taken directly to the landfill, 447 Alexander Drive, Montgomery.
According to Jason Yorks, manager, the temporary suspension of recycling at the West Third Street location was due to a lack of workers.
“We have manpower problems at all levels” Yorks said.
He noted that the suspension is only until they “can understand logistics.”
The transfer station currently operates two boxes at the facility for recycling electronics, creating congestion in this area.
Yorks said they were looking for a way to redevelop the area to make it safer. Until they find a way to do so, the recycling area will be closed at the transfer station.
This is a temporary move, he stressed.
“It’s not eliminated, just hanging in one place”, Yorks said.
Recycling collections will continue at the landfill for residents of Lycoming County only. There is no cost for items such as televisions, computers, and computer peripherals, such as keyboards, speakers, desktop printer, and computer mouse. No other electronic device can be recycled to landfill.
To recycle, bring the authorized items to the landfill location and stop at the weigh house.
For devices containing Freon, such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers, a charge of $ 20 applies. These items will be accepted at the landfill only.
Another Yorks reminder: “Just because it has a cord doesn’t mean it’s electronic. “
Microwaves and toasters have cords but are not considered electronic devices. Yorks said these are considered junk.
When the transfer station is closed, the conveyor belt and the frame will be replaced. The belt had been replaced in 2011, but the motor drive has been in use for 20 years, Yorks said.
“This has been seen a lot of use” he said.
