RED BLUFF – The Red Bluff Spartans took a big first-half lead on Friday night against Lassen and withstood a late charge from the Grizzlies to claim a home win, 24-9.

The Spartans wereted no time scoring in opening practice. Quarterback Caiden Wehbey hit Lebron Thomas 30 yards to put him in the red zone, then joined Cooper Bonham in the end zone to put Red Bluff on top 6-0.

Lassen responded almost as quickly as Zeik Christensen scored from 10 yards and the Grizzlies took a 7-6 lead.

The game calmed down until the dying seconds of the first quarter, when Bonham scored from 6 yards to make it 12-7.

On the ensuing kick, Elijah Wheeler returned the ball to midfield, but a blow rattled the ball and the Spartans recovered to start from their own 44. Wehbey punched Frankie Sanchez, who did a spectacular catch while falling to the ground, the 20. Wehbey then took it from a 2 on a goalkeeper to bring the score to 18-7.

Braden Robinson knocked out Lassen Branson Glover’s quarterback and brought him back to midfield with 5:41 left in the half and Wehbey found Sanchez for 55 yards and another touchdown to put the Spartans ahead 24- 7.

The third quarter was kind of a dead end. The Grizzlies scored three points in the first practice, but a fumble from Trey Hughes put Lassen back in business on his own 31. The Spartans started in the 50 after forcing a punt, but returned him on the downs in the Lassen 16.

Thomas got a pick on Glover to give the ball to Red Bluff at Lassen 40, but Wehbey got the ball at Lassen 30 and the Grizzlies recovered.

Lassen drove to Red Bluff 4. A fumble was skipped by Red Bluff’s Brody Tonnemacher to kill the player, however. On the next play, Graeson Glover made a tackle in the end zone for a safety and it was 24-9.

The Grizzlies threatened in the dying minutes and another touchdown would have made it a one-point game, but penalties hurt them and the Spartans took over at 32 with 1:30 to go. After some big wins, the Spartans knelt down at Lassen 15 to end the game.
