The Redskins entered the NFL draft in 2019 with many holes in the current lineup and a nice selection of top 100 picks to try to fill some of those holes. What they did to meet those needs and how they did it was an absolute beauty!
Despite the rumors that the Redskins are in all quarters of the top, and even that they are mentioned as a team seeking to rank in the top 3 to get a future calling to the franchise, the Skins played smart and followed up close draft board that University Scout Director Kyle Smith and his team have put together – and let me just say it was a good DAMN board!
We also thank Daniel Synder for counterbalancing what many thought was his desire to get into the draft to get a player like Dwayne Haskins, and even Bruce Allen for calling the names of players chosen by his representatives who were in Nashville.
Overall, this is one of the best drafts this team has ever seen – and most of you who know me know that I'm not very easy to please when it comes to this genre. things.
Below, I will present my analysis and the notes of our preliminary choices for 2019.
Round 1, choice 15: Dwayne Haskins, Ohio Street, Street – Staying tight and dropping Dwayne Haskins at selection 15 fit the definition of brilliant. A quarterback on a rookie contract was probably the Redskins' main need, and it was an incredible choice of value against need. I had Haskins ranked as my best quarterback in the repechage, and doing it where we did it, without having to give up any available capital, was just fantastic.
Early in the drafting process, shortly after the Ohio St. Appellant set his record, he announced his intention to participate in the NFL draft. I told myself that it was impossible to sniff him at number 15. He has the entire package as a smuggler, with plus size, a barrel for an arm, accuracy, throwing ability from different angles and an incredible knowledge of football. It's a leader, for example, and a guy who improves the people around him Since he's been ignored by three other teams requiring a quarterback in the first half of the draft, Haskins will probably in the league with a token on the shoulder, seeking to prove to those teams that they made a mistake in passing it – especially the NFC New York Giants of the NFC East.
Tyler's Take: Absolutely exceptional choice in 15th place overall! The quarterback is the most important player of a football team and the Redskins have an incredible talent. Not having to ride in the repêchage to get it makes this choice even better.

Round 1, choice 26: Mount Miss St. EDGE Sweatshirt – Sweat was one of my favorite players in all this draft, and he fell into a situation of great need for the Redskins. Before the draft, I ranked him as one of the top 10 picks and I recently made fun of the Giants in sixth place. During the combine, it was discovered that he was suffering from heart problems. Although relatively benign, some teams may have been frightened. As the project progressed, it was rumored that the diagnosis was inaccurate and that its condition may have been slightly exaggerated. Whatever the case may be, Sweat has slipped from the first day to mid-twenties – and that's where the Redskins acted.
Abandoning their second round pick choice (No. 46 overall) in the 2019 draft and a second round of 2020, the Redskins came back in the first round and selected Sweat 24th. Tears of joy (yes, you can hear tears!) Were heard throughout New England from the Tyler family when this selection was announced!
In Sweat, the Redskins feature a pure EDGE fighter recognized for its ability to convert speed into power. He broke the combine record for defensive linemen by running a 4.41 40 run at 6'6 "260 lbs. His length (35 3/4 "arm), frame and athleticism will make him an immediate impact player in front of Ryan Kerrigan, and give the Redskins something that they did not have to OLB since the move to defense 3-4 years ago – speed in the pure state!
Tyler's Take: My favorite project choice for us! Talk about value vs. need – this choice defines it! I had Sweat among the top 10 overall in this draft class and made it to the 24 pick and give up as little as we had to do it was fantastic!

Round 3, choice 12: Terry McLaurin WR Ohio St. – Parris Campbell, McLaurin's teammate, may have stolen some of the Ohio St. titles, but many of the experts said McLaurin was the best wide receiver of the Buckeyes. At nearly 6 "1" and 208 lbs, McLaurin has demonstrated his talents as one of the top catchers in Mobile at the Senior Bowl. He then chained with a combine performance that allowed him to perform a 4.35 40, 37.5-inch vertical jump and display 18 reps at 225 pounds. His fieldwork was stellar and his inventory stock began to increase.
Some experts in the field had asked McLaurin to participate in the second part of the round, but when he played for the Redskins in the third round, the decision was very easy. Not only is McLaurin fast, but he is a very advanced runner, a physical after shot, an excellent blocker and a special demon. He is an example type of player who, according to all accounts, is an accomplished professional on and off the field.
Tyler's Take: Very solid choice! He's a guy who has the chance to become a very good receiver and ace of special teams. This is a type of DIY that should be a great leader of this team for years to come. Moreover, he and Haskins already have a chemistry.

Tower 4, choice 10: Bryce Love RB Stanford – Love began his career at Stanford as a substitute for former first-round pick, Christian McCaffrey. In the second year of reserve, he had 783 rushing yards and three goals. The following year, after McCaffrey left for the NFL, Love ran for 2118 yards and had 19 touchdowns, finishing second in the Heisman vote. It did not have the same impact in 2018 as the teams wanted to stop the dynamic runner by stacking eight men in the box. He had ankle problems that prevented him from planting, cutting and accelerating. In the team's last game on December 1, he tore the ACL.
If Love had participated in the draft in 2018 as a junior, it would have been a first or second round pick choice. Instead, he chose to come back and finish his degree (he hopes to become a pediatrician when he finishes playing football). The wounds were extremely unfortunate, but with the advances made in reconstructive ACL surgery today, he is expected to make a comeback. In good health, Love has a speed below 4.4 and an amazing acceleration. He is an underrated receivers off the backfield and could eventually replace Chris Thompson, who is expected to become a free agent in 2020.
Tyler's Take: I loved this choice! Some might say that it was not a necessity, and Love was chosen for a ride too high, but Mark Dominik told me during the preliminary conference call that Love was somebody to watch out and that he would go higher than most others. thought. Dominik was there.

Round 4, choice 29: Wes Martin OG Indiana – I have to admit that I have not seen any movies about Martin, so I can only trust what others have reported about him.
At 6'3 "311, he is known for his brute force (would have made 42 reps at 225 pounds at Indiana) and is a mauler on the inside. He was a starter and team captain for three years in Indiana. He is solid in running, but could have some difficulties with the 3 fastest techniques in the NFL. He should be able to enter the camp and compete for the starting left guard with fellow rookie Ross Pierschbacher and Ereck Flowers.
Tyler's Take: Not a sexy choice, but should provide a solid depth with a future starting potential.

Round 5, choice 15: Ross Pierschbacher G / C Alabama – What would a draft Redskins be without a player caught in Alabama? Well, the Redskins have not disappointed in this area by choosing Alabama's offensive lineman, Ross Pierschbacher.
In my opinion, the Redskins had an excellent value for money in this selection because Pierschbacher was my last hope. He is not big enough (307 pounds), but he is a technician who has an excellent footwork and who understands the angles. He spent four years in Alabama and has the ability to play as either goalkeeper or center. He may need to add functional strength, but once he has done so, he will have the potential to be a very good professional. I see him competing at training camp to win the starting gate and serve as the team's relief center.
Tyler's Take: I like that choice a lot, and I think Pierschbacher is really underrated at this point. I would not be surprised if he arrives and wins the starting guard spot this summer.

Tour 5, choice of 35: Cole Holcomb LB North Carolina – Holcomb is another perspective that I did not study during the writing process. Therefore, my assessment of him is only about what I heard and read.
What struck me the most when I looked at some of the highlights of the Holcomb post-draft, is its timeliness. He quickly diagnosed the plays and went quickly to them. He seemed to be more of a finalist tackler than a guy who was there to hit hard, but that helped get the job done.
The former coach is a little underweight at 231 pounds, but leads his team in tackles three years in a row at UNC, and was a remarkable team early in his university career. He ran 40 years in 4.48 at his pro day.
Tyler's Take: I agree with this choice at this stage of the repechage as depth and ability of the special teams. We needed more speed as a linebacker, and Holcomb gives us the exact meaning.
NFL comparison: Tim Shaw
Quality: C
Round 6, choice 34: Kelvin Harmon WR NC State – Upon entering the project, Harmon was planted in the second round. It did not work very well at the combine, posting a 4.6 40, but its band was outstanding. He has accumulated 1000 years of consecutive play at NC State before deciding to leave early as a junior.
This kid is a big receiver of physical possession with an alpha mentality. At almost 6'3 "and 221 pounds, he is a bully. He may not have the fastest feet, but he does a good job putting his defender in the back, and he uses the double hits as well as any other catcher of this class. He can use his body to protect the small defenders of the ball, and he follows the throws well over the shoulder. He is a real threat to the red zone – something that the Redskins have not had here for years.
Tyler's Take: I defended Harmon when he appeared on the board with our first-round pick, and getting him into the sixth round was an absolutely unbelievable value that corresponded to a compelling need. I think that Harmon can come in with a flea in the shoulder and become a beginner as a rookie. He will be an excellent player for rookie Dwayne Haskins. If these two can build chemistry over the years; Be careful!

Round 7, choice 13: Jimmy Moreland DB JMU – Morland is a local product of JMU, which I was really not aware of throughout the writing process. I did some film studies on him after the selection and I left very impressed.
First, he has an excellent speed, reaction and consciousness. He plays the ball very well in the air, often going up and pointing the ball in front of larger receivers. He is excellent in press coverage and can really tackle.
Tyler's Take: Excellent athlete with exceptional ball skills (18 career steals), which some say may be able to switch to free security, even if he was not tall enough (5'10 "185) .
NFL comparison: Lamarcus Joyner

Round 7, choice 39: Jordan Brailford EDGE Oklahoma St. – Brailford recorded impressive numbers at the combine, including a vertical of 4.65 40, 37.5 inches and 22 representatives of 225 pounds. The injuries hindered him early in his university career, but he became very strong in 2018, collecting 55 tackles, 17 losses, 10 sacks and two forced fumbles.
Tyler's Take: Brailford could fight for a place on the roster as a reservist outside the linebacker and the special teamer.

Overall, this is one of the best projects I've seen with the Redskins since I started following the team in my youth. Our choices met the needs of the major teams, and the value of these choices was for the most part outstanding.

Best value choice: Kelvin Harmon
