Last week, information was reported that Jay Gruden was "not consulted" on much of the Redskins decision-making process in the off-season. It was something that apparently really frustrated the head coach.
On Tuesday, Gruden had the opportunity to react to this information. In speaking to the Arizona media at the annual NFL meetings, he explained how Washington executes the signatures and that some discords are quite normal.
"Everyone has their opinion, but in the end, we hand in our reports, we give our recommendations, we have our say," said Gruden. "Guys are signed, we are satisfied with the guys we have signed in. In a perfect world, of course, I would like to have total control, but I do not do it, it's just not my position and I accept it. "
"I could be surprised by a movement or two," he added later. "But most of the time, I'm on board for each one of them, it works very well, frustration can sometimes happen from time to time for a move or two, but at the end of the day, I know I'm on board. "
Eric Bickel of the Junkies Sports reported that Gruden had been informed of the signing of a critical message by Landon Collins via a member of the media, instead of being informed beforehand. Gruden downplayed the fact that, however, the appellant of Collins' acquisition is "the ultimate goal" of the franchise in an independent agency and that he supports it.
"I'm not in negotiations at all, so often I will not know we've signed a contract with a guy," he said. "It's just natural."
Overall, improving communication is what Gruden has been wanting for some time in the organization. That said, it may be that things have worked and will continue to work in Ashburn.
Regardless of the degree of his voice before certain moves were made, Gruden seemed much more focused on how the Redskins will win in 2019. He should be too, given the pressure he is facing .
"I'm going to coach anyone on the ground," he said.
