BLESSED: Bishop David Bonnar of the Diocese of Youngstown will be the keynote speaker at a pro-life speakers event titled “Blessed: every life counts, from conception to natural death! “ will be held Sunday at 6:30 pm at St. Christine’s Church at 3165 S. Schenley Ave., Youngstown. Other speakers included Pastor Walter Moss of Canton, author of “Why am I a pro-life black pastor?” “ and Tia Ciferno, director of the Bella Women’s Center, Warren. A reception and exhibition of pro-life information will follow. This event is free for the public. Presented by Men and Women United for Life and the Diocese of Youngstown Pro-Life, Marriage and Family Life Office.
CELEBRATE BIRTHDAYS: Bishop David Bonnar of the Diocese of Youngstown will celebrate a special Mass at 1 p.m. Sunday at St. John the Baptist Basilica in Canton to mark the wedding anniversaries of 47 couples who are honored for a total of 2,286 years of marriage. of life ranging from 25 to 66 years.
Thomas and Joann Peters of Little Flower Parish, Middlebranch, the oldest married of the registrants, are celebrating their 66th birthday. Other celebrating couples include: 16 married couples aged 51 to 66; 15 couples married for 50 years; nine couples will observe 40 years; and five couples will mark 25 years.
The wedding anniversary celebration includes the renewal of wedding vows at Mass and a personalized certificate. A reception will be held for honored couples and their families after Mass in the school hall, hosted by members of the Saint John’s Guild.
COVID-19 MEMORIAL: A COVID-19 Memorial Prayer Service will be held on October 24 at 2 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery, 248 S. Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown. The celebrant is Bishop David Bonnar of the Diocese of Youngstown. There will be honors for loved ones, family, friends and veterans who have been lost to the COVID-19 pandemic. There will be a blessing and dedication of a COVID-19 memorial bench and wreath laying ceremony. The event is sponsored by Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services.
PET BLESSING: St. James’s Episcopal Church in Boardman will be holding a Pet Blessing at noon on October 17th. Animals must be kept on a leash or in a crate. Supplies will also be collected for local relief organizations, including towels, guinea pig and gerbil food and old newspapers.
BLESSING BOX: A new “Blessing Box” or a pantry has been installed in the parking lot of the New Life Lutheran Church, 1181 Churchill Hubbard Road, Liberty. Donations in boxes are always available. As well as being open 24/7, there are also no limits or restrictions on how much people can take if they need extra food. Everyone is welcome to give or receive food from them. Reverend Chelsea Spencer is the pastor.
HAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY: The Catholic Funeral Services and Cemeteries of the Diocese of Youngstown will offer the Rosary of Divine Mercy in all four cemeteries at 3:00 p.m. on Fridays. The Rosary will be said alternately in cemeteries. The first Friday of the month will be at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown; the second Friday at the Resurrection Cemetery, Austintown; the third Friday at All Souls Cemetery, Cortland; and the fourth Friday at the Calvaire cemetery, Massillon.
OKTOBERFEST: The St. Vincent de Paul Society of the Mahoning County District will present the Oktoberfest from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on October 16 at St. Christine Social Hall, 3165 S. Schenley Ave., Youngstown. There will be authentic German cuisine, locally brewed beer, a 50/50 raffle and a basket raffle. Tickets will be sold at the door, or individuals can purchase tickets prior to the event by calling the district office at 330-333-3601. Tickets cost $ 25 each, which includes a meal and three beer tickets.
CHILDREN’S CLUBS: First Baptist Church, 26 E. Church St., Niles, will host the Awana Club and Kids 4 Truth Club at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.
OPENING OF THE SYNOD: On April 24, Pope Francis approved a new synodal program for the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops entitled, “For a Synodal Church: communion, participation and mission. The path to the celebration of the Synod includes three phases between October 2021 and October 2023, a diocesan phase, a continental phase and a concluding phase at the level of the universal Church.
To underline that the synodal path is a shared journey, the Holy Father will celebrate the opening of the Synod in Vatican City today and on Sunday. On October 17, Francis asked each diocese to celebrate the opening of the Synod. Bishop David Bonnar of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Youngstown will celebrate the synod during the opening Mass at 2:00 p.m. on October 17 at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown.
Bonnar appointed Bishop John Zuraw as the contact person for the synodal consultation. He will be the point of reference and the link between the Episcopal Conference and the diocese.
