The Zoom video conferencing application contains two major security issues for Mac users. First, uninstalling the application in the usual way does not really remove it from your system; by installing Zoom, you have actually installed a persistent web server on your system that can be used to reinstate the application without your permission.
Why is this a problem? Because an attacker can then send you an invitation link to a meeting (embedded in a website, or even an email) that launches Zoom (even if you've "deleted" it) . This assists you in a conference call and, by default, your webcam is sure, which could create difficult moments depending on what you do.
Jonathan Leitschuh, a security researcher, presented two main solutions to this problem in his recent public disclosure of Zoom's vulnerabilities. At a minimum, you will want to enable Zoom video settings and enable this setting: "Disable my video when I attend a meeting."
You can also enable this setting through the Mac terminal if you want to have style. Run one of the following two commands:
Turn off your default webcam only for your local account
default values write ~ / Library / Preferences / us.zoom.config.plist ZDisableVideo 1
Turn off your default webcam for all users on your Mac
Sudo defaults enter /Library/Preferences/us.zoom.config.plist ZDisableVideo 1
The most important solution, if you ask me, is to completely uninstall Zoom, which means removing the persistent web server it has dropped on your system. To do this, you need to open the terminal of your Mac and run two commands:
First, run this to obtain the process ID or PID of the Web server: Lsof -i: 19421
Then run this command and enter the PID where the text in square brackets is: kill -9 [process number]
You will then want to pick up the ~ / .zoomus directory on your Mac and delete it entirely.
Finally, to make sure that this server will not be reinstalled on your system for any reason, run these two commands in Terminal:
rm -rf ~ / .zoomus
touch ~ / .zoomus
And, of course, remove the Zoom application as you would for any application you want to uninstall.
Go ahead: use browser-based applications for web meetings
Most major web conferencing services (Zoom, Lifesize, WebEx, etc.) allow you to participate in teleconferences through your browser. Although you can install an application on your computer, there is no reason to ignore the cleaner browser approach. You probably will not need to install an application on your system (or in the case of Zoom, an application that comes with many security issues). most situationsyou can always do anything you could have done in the meeting.
If you absolutely must If you do not have a browser-based experience, consider installing the Web Conferencing Service application on your iPhone or Android device. This means that you will need to find a place to install your phone or tablet when you log in, but at least you will not install problematic software on your main PC.
