SCIO – After nearly a year of renovations, the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District has unveiled its new facility and new restaurant Tappan Lake Marina.

A media event took place on Tuesday morning where MWCD officials presented the nearly $ 6 million renovation project that began in November. Adria Bergeron, director of marketing and communications at MWCD, said the improvements involved a complete remodel of the old building, including a new marina, bait shop and restaurant. The new facility offers better access to its guests, she said.

“The footprint is the same, but they took it down to the posts and rebuilt it.

“With the construction, we have provided better access to the lake itself and to our customers who come out of the water to enjoy the restaurant or go out of the way to enjoy the lake. “ she said.

Bergeron said construction was due to be completed earlier this year; however, it fell behind due to a delay related to materials and contractor’s staffing issues.

“We are finally done and we will be ready to open up in 2022” she added.

The marina area is located on the lower level of the facility, with the restaurant occupying the upper level space, which includes a view of the lake and an outdoor patio for additional seating. There are stairs and an elevator to access the lower level.

Boris Slogar, chief engineer at MWCD, said the facility is much more energy efficient than the previous building.

“The building is heated and cooled using a geothermal system, so we have heat exchangers that are actually in the lake. We bring the brine water into the lake through pipelines, and it’s kind of like a geothermal system that you can have for residential use. Here we have a commercial grade system that heats and cools the building with great efficiency ”, he said. “The building is fully illuminated by LEDs – low power consumption, high efficiency use in terms of electricity, heating and cooling.”

Green infrastructure will also be put in place in the spring to filter runoff from the parking lot, Slogar said.

“We are doing everything we can to be good stewards of this property that we have”, he added.

While renovations to the facility are complete, the Waters Edge Kitchen + Bar won’t open until April due to some construction delays. The future restaurant, which now seats 250 people – 150 inside and 100 on the covered terrace – is owned by MWCD and operated by Shari Lewis and Matt Donohoe, owners of the Dennison Yard, an Italian-style restaurant.

Lewis said the Waters Edge restaurant will be different from its current restaurant. While they’re still working on finalizing the restaurant’s new menu, she said it would include items like burgers, steaks, fish sandwiches, flatbreads, wraps and more.

“We have a lot of opportunities for what we can do with the menu,” she said, noting that the new kitchen area has a lot of space and equipment. “We will have a variety of things that people can enjoy coming out of the lake who want more of a casual thing, and also for people who are driving for a date night or bringing their family because they want to dine with a view. . “

Lewis said they were eager to fill the kitchen and open in the spring. She said they have a few openings for a general manager and a kitchen manager. Anyone interested in submitting a resume can do so by sending an email to [email protected].

The marina will remain open on weekends until mid-October where you can purchase boat rentals, boat fuel, fishing licenses, boating licenses, and limited bait. After October 15, the store will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Jeremy Hoffer, manager of the Tappan Lake Marina, said he recommends people call ahead during the winter months to check store availability.

Although the season starts to slow down during the winter months, Bergeron said there are still people who enjoy ice fishing on the lake and use the hiking trails. She said they call on those who participate in ice fishing to be careful as it can be a dangerous sport.

An open house where the public can tour the new facility is scheduled for Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 33315 Cadiz-Dennison Road, Scio.

“We are delighted to welcome the community this Saturday. This is an opportunity for people who have been driving there or heard about the construction to come in and take a look for themselves ”, said Bergeron.
