The “RENT” 25th Anniversary Farewell Tour, which runs October 19-24 at the Fisher Theater, will bring Broadway musicals back to Motor City this fall, with strict pandemic protocols in place.
The second show on the bill is the musical “Pretty Woman”, which runs November 2-14 at the Fisher.
“In October, it will be 60 years since the Fisher Theater reopened as a legitimate Broadway theater,” said Alan Lichtenstein, executive director of Broadway in Detroit. “And now, 842,400 minutes since our last performance, we’re ready to start a new era of Broadway performances with one of Detroit’s favorite shows, ‘RENT’. Ring the bells, flash the lights. Our intermission is coming to an end.
The show, which debuted on Broadway in 1996, won the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Jonathan Larson’s “RENT,” which devoted fans will watch time and time again, shares the message of choosing love over fear and living life without regret.
The musical follows a year in the life of a diverse group of artists and friends as they struggle to achieve their dreams amid economic challenges.
The show has been called a “cultural touchstone” as well as a rite of passage, inspiring those who see it.
“Seasons of Love” is one of his best-known songs, but other favorites include “One Song, Glory”, “Light My Candle”, “Tango Maureen”, “La Vie Boheme”, “I Should Tell You “,” I will cover you “and” Your eyes “.

After “RENT”, another musical arrives at Fisher from November 2-14, as “Pretty Woman” arrives to woo fans of the film and romance.
Broadway superstar Adam Pascal will play the male lead role of Edward Lewis, with rising star Olivia Valli as the female lead, Vivian Ward.
Roy Orbison and Bill Dee’s hit song “Pretty Woman”, which appeared in the 1990 film, continues in the musical, which is described as “romantic and fun” and a “compelling contemporary fairy tale”.

The Fisher Theater will offer a six-show season 2021-2022, starting with “Pretty Woman”, and will follow a November 23 through December 5 screening of “Hadestown.”
“What the Constitution Means to Me” will run from December 14 to January 2, without a performance from December 20 to 26, followed by performances of “Hairspray” from January 18 to 30.
The Fisher Theater will host “An Officer and a Gentleman” from February 1 to 13, while the Detroit Opera House will host performances of “Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations” from August 9 to 28.
Two shows postponed to 2021-2022 have been rescheduled: “Beautiful – The Carole King Musical” will run from January 4 to 9 and “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical” from March 8 to 20, both at the Fisher Theater.
Other off-season shows include a TBD series from “Disney’s Frozen”, as well as an early 2022 visit to “Disney’s The Lion King”.
Lichtenstein said they were excited to announce performance dates and bring Broadway shows back to Detroit.
