One in 500 Americans has now died from Covid-19 since the coronavirus pandemic began last year, according to a new report from CNN.
The death toll in the United States reached 663,913 people on Tuesday evening, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. That’s 0.2% of the country’s 331.4 million people, the most recent population figure from the US Census Bureau.
The flu, by comparison, kills between 12,000 and 61,000 Americans per year, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Covid has killed more than 10 times as many people in 18 months.
The death rate from Covid is highest in New York state, where 1 in 356 – 54,574 of 19.45 million New Yorkers – has died from Covid, according to the CDC. The state’s death rate is 280 per 100,000 population (0.28%) compared to 200 per 100,000 nationally.
New York State has the third highest death toll, behind California (66,716) and Texas (58,901). Florida is fourth with 49,254 deaths.
Only three states currently have a higher death rate than New York. Mississippi has recorded 9,061 deaths (or 304 per 100,000 population), New Jersey 27,709 deaths (or 304 per 100,000 population) and Louisiana 13,120 deaths (or 282 per 100,000 population).
The CDC also breaks down the Covid data for New York City compared to the rest of the state. Lower New York State has the highest death rate of 405 deaths per 100,000 population, while upper New York State has a much lower rate of 185 per 100,000 population.
Concerns remain high due to the delta variant of Covid-19, which now accounts for the majority of Covid cases nationwide. Almost 94% of all counties in the United States are experiencing a high spread of Covid, including all 62 counties in New York state.
Nationally, the United States has seen a 30% increase in the average number of daily cases and nearly triple the average number of daily deaths over the past month, according to CNN’s analysis of CDC data. The majority of people hospitalized and killed by Covid-19 are not vaccinated.
