Cowboys defensive back coach Maurice Linguist has a new position as defensive co-coordinator at the University of Michigan, reports Matt Zenitz of AL.com.

The Cowboys have already hired the linguist’s replacement. Joe Whitt Jr. will serve as secondary coach and defensive passing play coordinator along with new coordinator Dan Quinn.

The linguist, a longtime college assistant before joining the Cowboys for the 2020 season, will help Mike Macdonald replace Don Brown. The Wolverines hired Macdonald from the Ravens.

The linguist, 36, played defensive back to Baylor. He has coached high school at Texas A&M, Minnesota, Mississippi State, and Iowa State and has also coached at the University of Buffalo, James Madison, Valdosta State and Baylor.

In its only season in Minnesota in 2017, the Gophers placed 11th nationally in passing defense (174.5 yards per game) and allowed just 16 touchdowns per pass, which tied for 22nd. FBS rank.
