There is now a strong possibility, if not a probability, that Phillip Lindsay will leave the Denver Broncos this offseason.
According to media reports, the Broncos filed an original tender – valued at $ 2.133 million for 2021 – on the restricted running back on Monday.
This means the team will have the right of first refusal if Lindsay signs an offer sheet with an outside contender, but Denver will not receive compensation if the sheet does not match. (You may recall that the Broncos nearly lost CJ Anderson to the Dolphins in 2016 after choosing not to bid him in the second round.)
Compare that to the $ 3.384 million second-round offer that would have, at best, allowed the Broncos to make a second-round pick or, at worst, secure Lindsay’s return next season.

A two-time 1,000-yard fullback and ex-Pro Bowler, Lindsay went through an injury-marred and statistically disappointing 2020 campaign in which the Colorado product only had 502 rushing yards and one touchdown in 118 attempts (eight games ). He added seven receptions for 28 yards, losing passing homework to veteran Melvin Gordon, who led the Broncos with 1,144 scrum yards and 10 total points (nine rushing).
But Lindsay has grown increasingly unhappy with her standing – or lack of – in the organization, publicly voicing her displeasure on numerous occasions during the offseason. The writing presumably on the wall, he alluded to a Denver divorce during a March 10 interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
“What more can I do? What more can I show?” Lindsay responded when asked if he felt wanted.
Assuming Lindsay is really fucked up, the Broncos should advance to the post with Gordon, who still faces possible league discipline after his arrest for drunk driving last October. (Gordon was cleared of the DUI charges.)
The team also have Royce Freeman under contract until 2021, although it is now becoming likely that the Broncos will approach the job in next month’s draft.
Lindsay’s contract transfer ends a turbulent Monday for new Broncos general manager George Paton, who re-signed defensive end Shelby Harris, brought in cornerback Ronald Darby, turned down the safety option Kareem Jackson and fielded his RFA second round candidacy Alexander Johnson and wide receiver Tim Patrick.
