Report: Stephon Gilmore would take “a year-long pay rise to make it work”

A report released Monday morning said the Patriots and cornerback Stephon Gilmore had made no recent progress on a contract extension.

So what’s going on now with the veteran Patriots due to show up for training camp on July 27?

NFL Media’s Michael Giardi reports that the “Gilmore side is open to an extension of several years but is also said to be willing to increase his salary by a year – with free agency imminent next season – to make it work. There is still time to find an agreement. The phrase “make it work” presumably means Gilmore won’t report without a raise.

Gilmore did not attend New England’s offseason program, including the team’s mandatory minicamp.

Gilmore recently told reporter Josina Anderson that he wanted to be paid what he paid for. He is expected to receive $ 7 million in base salary in 2021 after the Patriots raised his contract by $ 5 million through 2020.

The 2019 Defensive Player of the Year is still recovering from surgery to repair his partially torn quad, an injury that sent Gilmore to the injured reserve in the final month of the season.
