INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A new report indicates that the rate of obesity in Indiana continues to climb alongside the expanding waistline of Hoosiers.
The Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation report shows that one in three Indiana residents is now obese and that their obesity rate has gone from 20% in 1995 to 34% in 2017.
According to the report, the Indiana obesity epidemic costs the state $ 8.5 billion a year in lost productivity and economic return, as well as additional costs related to health care.
Claire Fiddian-Green is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation. She told WFYI-TV that studies have shown that obesity does not depend solely on genetics and behavior, but that "where we live, work, and have fun" contributes to propensity. 39; obesity.
Fiddian-Green explains that the data show how healthy food access and other factors can affect a healthy weight.
