Several Republican lawmakers tore up the Biden administration’s climate czar John Kerry on Wednesday after Fox News reported the former secretary of state flew on a private jet in 2019 to accept a price for climate leadership in Iceland.
Kerry flew privately to accept the Arctic Circle award for providing “a cohesive voice lobbying US authorities to commit to tackling environmental issues,” Icelandic newspaper RUV reported. Critics from the GOP have argued that Kerry’s actions did not match his words on the subject of climate change.

“Why can John Kerry pretend the rules don’t apply to him?” tweeted Senator Bill Cassidy, R-La. “I’m not sure that flying around the world in a private jet while simultaneously trying to put the workers who provide your fuel out of work is a winning strategy as a climate czar.”
Senator Tom Cotton, R-Ar., Called Kerry a “fraud” for using a private plane.

Former North Carolina Rep. Mark Walker and other Republicans also spoke on the issue.

In 2019, Kerry was criticized by Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, who led the Arctic Circle Roundtable and noted his use of a private plane to get to the event, according to RUV.
Kerry defended his actions in an interview obtained by Fox News, saying he took steps to offset carbon emissions from his trip.
“If you offset your carbon, this is the only choice for someone like me traveling the world to win this battle,” Kerry said. “I negotiated the Paris accords for the United States. I have been involved in this fight for years. I negotiated with President Xi, to bring President Xi to the table so that we can get Paris.

“And I believe in the time it takes for me to get somewhere, I can’t cross the ocean, I have to fly to meet people and get things done,” Kerry added. Biden appointed Kerry as his administration’s special envoy on climate issues when he took office last month. On his first day in office, Biden took executive action to bring the United States back into the Paris Climate Agreement after a waiting period of around 30 days.
