Residents of Dane County are strongly encouraged to wear masks indoors

MADISON, Wisconsin – Residents of Dane County are strongly encouraged to wear masks indoors again, regardless of their immunization status.

Madison and Dane County Public Health issued the recommendation Thursday following a sharp increase in new cases of COVID-19 linked to the Delta variant. Medical experts suggest that anyone two years of age or older wear a mask in and around people outside their home.

“We are currently facing another pivotal moment in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Katrina Grande, who leads the COVID team for Public Health Madison & Dane County.

The number of new cases tends to increase in Dane County. Two weeks ago, the county’s 7-day average was 10 cases. As of Thursday it was 36 cases and on the rise. More than half of the cases observed during this increase concern unvaccinated people.

“With the contagiousness of the delta, we need to do all we can right now to stop the spread,” Grande said.

At this time, there is no binding warrant in place for Dane County. Public health experts also encourage people to get vaccinated.

“We got here by taking simple steps to protect ourselves and each other, but we can’t stop now,” added Grande.
