Ogden joined several other cities across the state and nation on Monday evening to remember Gabby Petito, a Florida woman whose mysterious disappearance took a tragic turn over the weekend with the rumored announcement be hers were found in Wyoming.
A crowd stood in silence outside The Monarch as the sun disappeared beyond the horizon, casting an orange glow on those who came to say goodbye to the 22-year-old, who documented a trip across the country with her fiancé on social networks.
Candles, flowers, letters and various keepsakes were placed at the foot of the Monarch Butterfly mural on 25th Street, where Petito recently stood in a post on his Instagram page. A framed photo of her smiling in front of the mural was placed on the site, leaning against the very spot where she was pictured.
“We can appreciate her beauty as she appreciated the beauty of Utah,” said Jake McMahon, who helped organize the local rally.
Ogden residents Kayla Herrick and Drake Osborn signed a provided remembrance book.
“You don’t have to know someone to show them love,” Osborn said.
Childhood friends McMahon, Seth Schilling and Jenna Burdess wanted to do something for Petito, so they held the vigil in his honor. Schilling thinks it’s good to be a good person.
“We can appreciate her beauty as she appreciated the beauty of Utah,” McMahon said.
Everything that was planned for the vigil and everything that was left in Petito will be sent to his family.
