Syracuse, NY – People 30 and older can start signing up for Covid-19 vaccination appointments tonight on the Onondaga County Department of Health website.

The state announced earlier today that people in this age group cannot make appointments at its vaccination site until 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

But Onondaga County Director Ryan McMahon has invited people 30 and older to start making appointments at the county site tonight. “We need you to get vaccinated,” he said. “Do the right thing.”

McMahon said he was happy the state was letting young people get vaccinated. People as young as 16 can start signing up for dates on April 6. The Pfizer vaccine is licensed for people as young as 16 years old. Only people 18 years of age and over can receive Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

McMahon said the county may hold pop-up vaccination clinics in high schools in the coming weeks.

He expects the state to allow Syracuse University to vaccinate students on campus. The SU has nurses who are qualified vaccinators. They volunteered to help the county when it started vaccinating the public. McMahon said the county was ready to help the SU and other colleges in the area vaccinate students on their campuses.

McMahon announced that two other county residents – a man in his 60s and another in his 60s – have died from Covid-19 in the past three days. This brings the total number of Covid-19 deaths in the county over the past year to 690.

He also reported 45 new positive cases today and said 32 county residents were hospitalized for Covid-19, including seven in intensive care units.

To date, 44% of adults in Onondaga County have received the Covid-19 vaccine.
