A retired California police chief who was stricken with the coronavirus said his 21-day hospital stay was proof the illness was not discriminatory.

“COVID doesn’t care, it’s gonna hit who it’s gonna hit and you don’t want to be the unlucky one like me that hits real hard,” Carlos Basurto, 51, told KTVU.com. “I don’t wish this virus on anyone.”

Basurto, who was released from hospital this summer and regaining his strength, told the media outlet his coronavirus plight began with a family trip to New Orleans in March. The recently retired chef, who has asthma, developed a fever and cough and had difficulty breathing.

He told KTVU.com he went straight to the emergency room upon his return home and was promptly placed in a coma and on a ventilator.

“The last time I thought I was going to talk to my dad was for Facetime,” his son, also named Carlos, told the newspaper. “It was made real for everyone, especially in those days when no one really knew what was going on, and what it was, was still brand new.”
