Ring recalls 350,000 smart doorbells due to fire issues

Ring issued a recall on Tuesday for hundreds of thousands of smart doorbells after receiving several reports of devices catching fire.

The recall involves approximately 350,000 2nd generation ring bells sold in the United States and approximately 8,700 more sold in Canada, according to a notice issued by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. The video doorbells were sold on Ring’s website and on Amazon between June 2020 and October 2020, according to the advisory.

“The video doorbell battery can overheat when incorrect screws are used for installation, posing a fire and burn hazard,” the advisory said.

The CPSC said Ring has received 23 reports of his doorbells catching fire and causing minor property damage. The company has also received eight reports of minor burns from fires associated with its doorbell.

“The safety of our customers is our top priority,” said A Ring spokesperson. “We have and continue to work cooperatively with CPSC on this issue and have contacted customers who have purchased a Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) to ensure they have received the updated user manual and are following device installation instructions.

“Customers do not need to return their devices,” the spokesperson said.

The consumer can verify if their Ring doorbells are the subject of the recall by entering the serial number printed on the back of the device on the company’s support website.
