Astronomers say that they may have seen a neutron star swallowed by a black hole for the first time after seeing vast gravitational waves waving in space.
The waves were spotted by the Ligo Twin Observatory in the United States and the Virgo Detector in Italy following a possible collision on April 26th.
If confirmed, the important detection could help us better understand exactly what happens when stars strike black holes. The burning questions are whether the star was torn apart before being consumed by the black hole or if it simply fell into oblivion.

The detectors detect the tiny ripples of space and time that cross the universe when two gigantic objects meet. Patrick Brady, spokesman for Ligo and professor of physics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, said the signal for the potential collision was: "rather weak" and astronomers must thoroughly examine all the data before they can confirm the event.

"It's like listening to someone whispering a word in a busy cafe; it can be difficult to spread the word or even to be sure that the person whispers at all. It will take some time to reach a conclusion about this candidate, " he said.
The location of the eventual accident was reduced to about three percent of the sky at about 1.3 billion light-years. Astronomers around the world are now focusing their observations on this area of space to collect more information.
