FAIRMONT – The greatly improved River Valley Wildcats won a relentless 4-3 victory in women’s non-league tennis on Thursday over the modified No.6-seeded Fairmont roster on Thursday at Cardinal Courts.
With four regular subclass rookies switching places during the Fairmont Senior Day portion of Homecoming Week, the Cardinals and Wildcats battled for 2 hours in a double meet at Fairmont.
Tied at 3, Courtlyn Runck of River Valley and Rachel O’Connor of Fairmont locked themselves in a slugfest at the edge of the stands in the fourth singles action to determine the team’s result.
O’Connor earned a 6-2 victory in the first set before Runck reacted with a 6-1 decision in the second set to force a third segment.
O’Connor finally broke the cycle of back-to-back service breaks in Game 8 of the third set, holding on to take a 5-3 lead. Runck, however, struggled to come back through several two-man games for a three-game winning streak to take a 6-5 lead.
O’Connor showed his courage by hammering his way to a win in Game 12 to force a tiebreaker in the third set. Despite a 4-1, 5-2 lead, Runck needed a dozen points in the extra session to ultimately top a 7-6 (7-5) win to mark the victory for River Valley.
Fairmont, however, quickly took a 2-0 lead on the team’s ledger when the Totzke twins – Libby and Maggy – combined for a 6-1, 6-0 second-double win, and the Senior star Claire Nemmers also only needed a baker. a dozen games to win a 6-1, 6-0 decision in the first singles.

St. Peter 4, Blue Earth Area 3 – The hometown Saints swept the double to beat the Bucs in Big South action Tuesday at St. Peter’s.
Josie Wiebusch and Macy Weller defeated Grace Hanson and Allie Lopez in the first double, 6-2, 6-1, while St. Peter’s Sophia Doherty and Molly Voeltz served a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Ella Survis and Lauren Survis during No 2 Doubles Games.

Marissa Benz took back-to-back wins 6-2 over Amelia Hildebrandt in the early singles for the Bucs, while Kylie Rosenau edged Rhyan Holmgren in the third singles, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), for BEA.
Olivia Dutton produced the Bucs’ other singles run with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Maddie Kamm in fourth place in the roster.
