Case changes since Friday

Riverside County has reported 2,126 new cases since Friday. This brings the total number of cases to 84,412.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said in his Monday, November 30, update that if coronavirus cases and hospitalizations continue to rise to their current levels statewide, “ we’re going to have to take much more dramatic action, probably drastic ”, including a possible home order.

51 of the state’s 58 counties, or 99.1% of the state’s population, are currently in the "purple" tier, which severely restricts capacity at retail establishments, closes fitness centers and limits restaurants to limited outdoor-only service.

“The virus is spreading at a rate that we have not seen since the start of this pandemic and the next few days and weeks will be critical in stopping the outbreak. Riverside County has been in the purple level since October 20 and has continued to move away from the parameters needed to move to the red level.

It comes just days after the California Department of Public Health issued a stricter mandate requiring people to wear headgear when outside the home at all times, with a few exceptions.

Test

1,109,560 tests have been performed so far, which is up to 26,314 since Friday

Riverside County will need to test at least 52,500 people per week in order to break out of the state’s most restrictive reopening level.

County officials say the number tested will allow health experts to identify hot spots of community spread and isolate those who may or may not show symptoms and who are spreading the disease without their knowledge.

The hours of operation of the Indio trial site have been extended. Starting Tuesday, opening hours will be 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Deaths and recoveries

The county has reported 5 more deaths from COVID-19 since Friday. The total number of deaths remains at 1,442.

Coachella Valley is responsible for two of the deaths, one from Palm Desert and another from the unincorporated community of Oasis.

Earlier this month, Riverside County Director of Public Health Kim Saruwatari reported that COVID-19 is the third leading cause of death in Riverside County in 2020.

Cancer and heart disease, also the leading killers in Riverside County, also increased in 2020, as did COVID-19.

“It’s not that we are hurting our other leading causes of death and adding to COVID. We are seeing a real increase in deaths from COVID,” Saruwatari said.

Riverside County reported 603 more recoveries during the same period. The total number of recoveries is now 67,305.

Hospitalizations

COVID-related hospitalizations have increased by 87 patients since Friday, bringing the total to 585. This is the highest number of coronavirus-related patients in Riverside County at one time since the start of the pandemic. The previous peak was 548 on July 15.

Riverside County has reported 14 more patients admitted to the ICU since Friday. There are currently 129 patients in Riverside County ICUs.

Earlier this month, Eisenhower Health provided an update on the hospital situation.

COO Martin Massiello noted that while current trends are in line with what hospital officials predicted, the Epidemiology Department predicts the outbreak will be worse than that of July.

As well this month, the hospital issued a note to staff at Masiello sounding the alarm over a sharp rise in hospital cases.

The 7-day positivity rate at Eisenhower Health is currently 11%, an increase of 14% over the past four days. Just two weeks ago, the positivity rate in the hospital was 5%, the highest since August.
