Gibraltar Carlson hosted the annual Marauder Cross Country Invitational at the Lake Erie Metropark on Saturday and the Downhill area teams did well against excellent competition.
In the 2-3-4 men’s race, Riverview had four top-15 runners and finished first as a team with a score of 47 points. New Boston Huron had three top 20 runners and finished second overall with 87 points, followed by Adrian (90). Riverview Gabriel Richard (111) was fourth and Flat Rock fifth (140). Allen Park Cabrini took seventh place (168) and Grosse Ile finished eighth (195).
Riverview sophomore Logan Ruffner finished first overall with a time of 17 minutes and 1.7 seconds and senior Gavin Shelton was fifth in 17: 26.9. Senior Sam Polgar (12th, 17: 52.0), sophomore Hayden Holmes (15th, 18: 08.7), senior Justin Shupe (19th, 18: 53.5) and senior Peter Gekas (20th, 18:57).
Junior Ryan Morris led Huron across the finish line with his fourth time of 17: 25.6. Senior Breen Patrick was 17th (18: 42.2), junior Griffin Mentzer 18th (18: 45.0) and senior Tyler Doss 24th (19: 01.5).
Richard junior Alex Meszaros was second overall in 17: 12.1. Senior John Borowicz was 16th (18: 09.3), senior Peter Laskaris was 22nd (18: 59.2) and senior Parker Heggie was 25th (19:04) for Richard.
Senior Kenny Carlman was 10th in 17: 41.3 for Flat Rock. Rams rookie Adam Brodie was 30th (19: 40.3), senior Bob Breslin was 33rd (19: 46.3) and rookie Dylan Stull 36th (19: 56.1).
The Monarchs were led by junior Christopher Russelburg (6th overall, 17: 34.9) and junior Logan Eiden (31st, 19: 42.2).
The Red Devils were led by sophomore Brenden Kapala (29th, 19: 39.3) and senior Joey Gall (38th, 20.00.5).
In the boys’ D1 race, Saline crossed the finish line in first place with 44 points. Canton was second with 72 points, followed by Temperance Bedford (81), Carlson (106), Ypsilanti Lincoln (116), Dearborn (121), Belleville (192) and Crestwood (208).
The Marauders had three top 20 runners, including second student Jon Anderson who finished fifth with a time of 17: 13.0. Senior Alec Panter was 15th (17: 48.1), senior Carson Blake was 20th (18: 05.5) and runner-up Quinn Burgei was 30th (18: 35.6) for Carlson.
Girls
Ava Teed will lead them all.
Teed, only a sophomore for Cabrini, won the girls’ D2-3-4 race with a time of 19: 44.5, beating Divine Child’s Kirsten Koss (19: 55.6) to the line arrival. She helped lead the Monarchs to an impressive finish against a solid team formation.
Divine Child placed three riders in the top seven and ran away with the girls’ D2-3-4 race with 49 points. Adrian was second (87) and Carleton Airport third (114). Ann Arbor Greenhills was fourth (115) followed by Cabrini (125), Flat Rock (125), Huron (163), Grosse Ile (167), Monroe (210) and Garden City (213).
Senior Cabrini Lily Heath was 11th (21: 41.0) and sophomore Nicole Teed was 21st (23: 04.1). Sophomore Ella Brash was 49th (26: 33.1) and rookie Antonina Pizzo 59th (31: 22.0).
The Rams had some good front runs led by Megan Woelkers. The freshman finished fifth with a solid time of 20: 50.3. Junior Meredith Stull was 14th (21: 51.9), first year Sophia Chan was 29th (23: 31.2), second year Grace Sturgeon was 43rd (25: 44.3) and second year Avery Barron was 51st (27 : 50.9).
Huron was led by senior Elizabeth Anderson (11th, 21: 44.1), junior Breeann Roupe (38th, 24: 31.9), junior Cara Bean (41st, 25: 18.1), runner-up Natalie Carlile (42nd, 25: 30,2) and junior Emma. Randles (54th, 29: 06.1).
Grosse Ile senior Anna Malonson finished 15th (21: 58.4). Freshman Taylor Karasinski finished 35th (23: 51.0), senior Cecilia Vesperman 36th (24: 02.4), junior Avery Brooks 47th (26: 24.7) and sophomore Riley Kerr 57th (29: 33.7) for the Red Devils.
In the girls’ D1 race, Temperance Bedford led the field taking the top four places and five of the top six to finish first with just 16 points. The Kicking Mules were led by senior Madison Foster who finished first by a mile (over a minute) with a time of 18: 02.3.
Wayne Memorial was second with 60 points, followed by Carlson (79), Dearborn (131), Crestwood (137), Lincoln (137) and Belleville (172).
The Marauders were led by Brooke Cifaldi senior who placed eighth with a time of 21: 24.6. Carlson’s other five riders made it to the top 21: sophomore Danica Swetz (15th, 22: 57.2); senior Amanda Balinski (17th, 23: 21.5); the second year Arianna Pate (19th, 23: 28.2); freshman Brooklyn Kemokai (20th, 23: 47,1); junior Kylie Iwasko (21st, 23: 53.0); and senior Abigail Polakowski (26th, 24: 52.6).
