The Robinhood investment app is down to one star on Google Play, thanks to a flood of thousands of negative news reviews.
The latest low rating comes just days after Google reclaimed the app’s rating by removing nearly 100,000 reviews, following a flood of negative ratings after Robinhood blocked purchases of popular Reddit stocks / r / WallStreetBets like GameStop or AMC last week. Robinhood’s rating review roller coaster was almost as high as GameStop’s share price. When users started reviewing the Bomb app last Thursday, Robinhood earned a one-star rating with almost 275,000 reviews. Google then removed nearly 100,000 of those reviews, bringing the app down to a four-star average with around 180,000 reviews. But as of the publication of this article, Robinhood returned to a new record of nearly 305,000 reviews, with a 1.1 star rating.
Google Play Store policies explicitly prohibit notices intended to “manipulate rating” of an app; the company previously removed previous Robinhood reviews because it believed they violated that policy.
A Google spokesperson confirmed The edge that the current reviews – which weren’t the ones removed in last week’s purge – comply with Google’s policies and will not be removed.
In a statement to The edge, Google commented that “Google Play’s app review systems are designed to provide an authentic and reliable view of an app’s user experience, and we take action for any inauthentic or coordinated activity aimed at artificially increasing or reducing the overall score. of an application. To be clear, this isn’t done to protect an app from negative reviews, but to help protect app developers from things like coordinated bombing and to protect our systems from artificial manipulation. “
The low review score is unique to the Google Play Store, at least for now. The iOS version of Robinhood still enjoys a 4.0 star rating on Apple’s storefront, although there has been an increase in negative reviews over the past few days for this version of the app as well.
