Grand Theft Auto V’s load times are ridiculous. This is true for GTA V itself, and it is even more true for GTA Online. A modder has discovered a way to cut those load times by 70%, and it looks like Rockstar has taken note – luckily, this time it’s not just about stopping the mod in question. Instead, this load time fix is officially implemented in an upcoming fix.
In the most basic of terms, t0st has reported that there is a single-threaded CPU bottleneck when GTA Online starts to load, and the game spends years reading redundant information from a JSON file that doesn’t have much reason to exist. In his original findings, t0st wrote, “If it hits Rockstar one way or another: The issues shouldn’t take more than a day for a single developer to resolve. Please do something about it. “
In a new update to this post, t0st says he “just received $ 10,000” through Rockstar’s bug bounty program, which is normally only used for major security issues. t0st adds: “I tried to ask for more technical details, but they couldn’t say anything.”
Rockstar himself tells PC Gamer that “after further investigation we can confirm that the player has in fact not disclosed an aspect of the game code related to the load times of the PC version of GTA Online that may be improved. As a result of these surveys, we’ve made some changes that will be implemented in a future title update. “
That $ 10,000 will probably spend better than any GTA Online cash, but for those of us watching this unfold, it’s not yet clear when the official patch will be implemented.
