Roger Charlery, aka Ranking Roger, singer of ska group The English Beat and co-founder of General Public, died Tuesday at 56 years old.

The Beat's social media channels (known in the United States as English Beat) confirmed this news with a message.

"Unfortunately, Roger died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, a few hours ago." Beat website said. "Roger's family would like to thank everyone for their continued support during this difficult time and we will be following others in the coming days." RIP ROGER!

"He fought and fought and fought, Roger was a fighter," the post added.

Charlery said in a video interview published on YouTube in early 2019 that he had been a victim of a stroke at the end of 2018 and that doctors had discovered two tumors in his brain that "I'm not sure about it." it was necessary to operate immediately.

Despite his fragile health, he still found time to finish his autobiography with co-writer Daniel Rachel, entitled "I can not stop it: my life is punctuated" (its release is scheduled for spring) .

Charlery joined The English Beat for three albums, in 1980, "I Just Can not Stop It", in 1981, "Wha? Ppen?" and 1982 "Special Beat Service".
