Two years after Mercedes decided to invest for the second time in Hungary, avoiding Romania, BMW has also come to announce the construction of a factory in the neighboring country, not in our country. The arguments for the election are the same as in 2016: very good infrastructure and qualified human resources
On July 30, 2016, Mercedes announced a new investment in Kecskemét (Hungary) after finalizing its first investment in 2012, and in Romania it was created a heated debate because of the missed opportunity. The total investment of Mercedes in Kecskemét then raises to two billion euros, with all the benefits created by the development.
The story repeats itself and Romania misses a new opportunity, this time the investor being BMW, who announced on July 31, 2018 the decision to allocate a billion euros for the construction of a factory in Hungary (in Debrecen), not in Romania
"Debrecen is the ideal place for BMW Group to expand its production network. It was chosen mainly for a very good infrastructure , adequate logistical connections and the proximity of the existing network of suppliers. The qualified staff of the region was another key advantage, "noted BMW in a note to the press in Romania – which, of course, asked how Hungary has was chosen as the destination of this investment
"By choosing Debrecen, the BMW Group strictly followed the process of selecting sites for possible factories around the world, looking at various opportunities in different countries. BMW's upe has had a professional relationship with all concerned countries on the basis of constructive collaboration, "said the German automaker.
The BMW Group's board of directors opted for Debrecen, Hungary because it best meets the selection criteria. According to the press release, these criteria include:
– Site-specific factors such as very good infrastructure and excellent accessibility by road, rail and air
– Appropriate logistical connections and proximity to the network of suppliers established
– a highly qualified workforce in the region
"The professional management of projects by our Hungarian partners was an additional criterion and Debrecen offers a high standard of living, which will also be attractive to expats from Germany and other parts of the world, "said the German company.
According to BMW, the recruitment process began today (nn – Tuesday, July 31) and applications can be sent online and the construction of the new Debrecen plant will start in 2019. An area of 400 hectares has been acquired for the new production facility
Thus, Romania missed another opportunity to attract foreign investment of billions of euros because of the deplorable state of infrastructure, demonstrating that neither the lessons of 2012 nor the 2016 (that they had to learn from Mercedes) had not been taught yet. The BMW lesson should be the last
