Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of the SpongeBob Patron pants, died Monday at the age of 57. He had been diagnosed with lateral sclerosis of amplitude (ASL) in March 2017.

The announcement was made Tuesday, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

"We are sad to inform you that Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of the SpongeBob Patron Pants, has passed away, and today we are celebrating a moment of silence in tribute to his life and work.", Nickelodeon representatives told Twitter.

Hillenburg is a graduate of Humboldt State University, in northern California, where he earned a degree in natural resource planning, focusing on marine resources. His career in animation began in 1987, when he enrolled at the Valencia Institute of Arts, California, where he earned a degree in Experimental Animation.

He has been the creator of several animated series on Nickelodeon, such as Rocko's Modern Life (1993-1996). In 1999, he launched "SpongeBob Square Pants", which has won numerous awards during its 20 years of broadcast.

Bob Sponge also appeared on the big screens in 2004 and 2015. In parallel, the character became the subject of a Broadway musical.
