Tax on new cars 2019. All car owners will have to pay

Most likely, the new car tax in 2019 will be annual and will not be paid on first registration or change of ownership, as in the past. Its level will be calculated based on the cubic capacity, the pollution standard and the amount of polluting emissions from the car.

Environment Minister Gratiela Gavrilescu said it was not a pollution tax, adding that the polluter had to pay, according to the truth.

"As I have said time and time again, it's not a pollution tax, an environmental stamp or any other name that includes the word tax." The designers of the new car tax are specialists from the Ministry of Environment, the Administration of the Environment Fund, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Finance and RAR.

"They tried to find a definitive form by consulting the two Romanian car manufacturers," said Gratiela Gavrilescu, adding that "the final form is approaching".

The minister also said that the final form of this tax would be that of "components". These will not all come into force on January 1, 2019. The tax will apply to all polluting machines, regardless of their age.

Regarding the position of the Ministry of Diesel, the Minister said that "a decision in this regard must be taken in the context of a very broad debate and not in a very short time."
