Tragedy on TV! Sweetness of sadness for adults and children. SpongeBob SpongeBob Patterns creator Stephen Hillenburg died just 57 years ago, the BBC television channel Nickelodeon said.
In a statement, the company said Hillenburg's death was due to a motor neuron disease (ALS), a disease diagnosed last March.
Hillenburg also directed the feature film "The SpongeBob SquarePants" in 2004.
"We are sad to share the news of the death of Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob", is the message written on the official Twitter account of Nickelodeon.
He was married to Karen Hillenburg for 20 years and they have a son, Clay.
SpongeBob Square Pants started in 1999 and has been broadcast on more than 200 episodes. He has also been translated into a Broadway musical, winning a Tony Award earlier this year.
