The new uniforms were presented for the first time on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at an event held at the National Military Circle a few days before the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Great Union.

Defense Minister Gabriel Leş, Chief of the Defense Staff General Nicolae Ciucă and Head of the Defense Forces Logistics Division, Brigadier General Constantin Negrea, also attended the presentation.

This is the first stylistic change of uniforms after 1948, thus abandoning the Russian inspired drawing of the last decades and wishing to get closer, including at the level of visual communication, by the Allies' allies. NATO, but also through a modern and uniform materials approach, from pants to pocket.

Designer Alexandru Ciucu has proposed to the Department of National Defense the prototypes of the new uniforms, then offer free models and advice to professionals specializing in the execution of the uniforms of the series, at the request of the Department of National Defense .

During the first months of 2019, the proposed models will be presented in the garrisons of the country, so that the soldiers, in their activity or in reserve, express their opinion in the form of questionnaires of evaluation. After that, the operational tests of the new models will be carried out in order to be able to equip the Romanian armed forces with the new military uniforms of city and service.

The Romanian designer honors the proposal received from the Ministry of National Defense and realized the entire pro bono project without any financial claim.

"The new design of the uniforms, which currently only concerns the land and air forces, is inspired by the Romanian army's clothing tradition of the two crucial moments of our recent history – the war of independence and the great union of 1918 – and perfected military uniforms of the most important NATO partner armies: the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Italy and France. I hope that the Romanian Armed Forces will wear these uniforms with pride and dignity, because they are thought out, studied and created to make them useful from the first moment they are observed, they are also comfortable, robust and practical, "says Alexandru Ciucu.

At the end of the presentation of the new military uniforms, the designer said: "Thank you for this opportunity to write the story, because one way or another, it's a story of fashion. This is a huge project in which I have been very enthusiastic, voluntarily, because I consider it a gift from my country in a centennial year.Soon a year without King Mihai personally dedicating this collection of uniforms in memory of His Majesty. "

Depending on the specificity of each arm of the army, the colors of the new uniforms are as follows:

Land Forces: Beige beige background for soldiers and NCOs, and dark beige beige background for officers and generals. For greater resistance to dirt, there are ground forces for all degrees and all variants of the pants or the dark skirt. These can only be used during service, not in the street or during ceremonies.

Air Force: Dark blue background with dark blue vip for soldiers and NCOs and dark blue background with blue vipuşu for officers and generals. The composition is composed of 40% wool and 60% cordura.

For both soldiers from land and air forces, the uniform has the same cutting line and the same construction elements. Only the color and some details of hierarchical differentiation differ.

New design elements

The designer explains the novelties of the design of the new uniforms, which have been the subject of a thorough study.

"The uniform of the city is worn by the soldiers in the activities of representation of the Romanian armed forces, both in the daily activities related to the duties of service as in the duties of ceremony and ceremony.

According to the studies conducted on this occasion at the National Military Museum, the vipuşca contrast is an element that can be found without exception in different colors, in the Romanian uniform, from 1832 to the First World War.

At that time, the design of the war uniform had changed considerably, both in Romania and at the international level, in the sense of simplification and the increase of its utility, notably thanks to the camouflage ability.

The outer pockets appear for the first time, differentiated by degree of design; those with a bellows and a blanket for officers and generals and those with a cap for non-commissioned officers and soldiers. This traditional element of hierarchical differentiation and aesthetic construction of new uniforms is preserved.

The modern elements, taken up and reinterpreted, uniforms of the main NATO partners, focus on the rounded shape of the pockets and the color of the French uniforms, the shape and size of the English hat, the concept of trousers in contrast with the vest, typical of the modern German Army, United States.

All these elements served as inspiration, as a starting point, they have been completely remodeled and harmonized in their own style, giving the new uniforms an original, elegant and integral look.

An element of novelty in the uniform of the Romanian army is due to the fact that the degrees are no longer differentiated chromatically according to the weapon. They have a dark brown background for all ground forces and a blue background for all air forces.

Through all these elements, through the cut and the base material used, the new city uniform aims to improve all the features related to the appearance, durability and comfort of the previous models.

The proposed fabric is a blend of merino wool and cordura. Cordura is a high-tech synthetic fiber specifically designed to offer greater resistance to mechanical factors – friction, fracture – but also chemical in nature – for superior color stability when exposed to the sun or in contact with various detergents . or chemical compounds, "says Alexandru Ciucu.
