The Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Liviu Dragnea, delivered a speech in front of the Palace of Parliament on the occasion of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Grand Union and the National Day of Romania, celebrated on 1 December.

«»I think it is our duty to continue this process of strengthening the position of our country within the EU and NATO. We have clear goals: adopt the euro, join the Schengen area. (…) We must also ensure an active role for Romania within NATO, in order to guarantee strong security and stable relations. All these objectives are major issues for Romania and we politicians have a duty to behave like real Romanians.

We are politicians, we are in a permanent internal competition. It's natural because democracy works. We criticize, attack and, unfortunately, sometimes we go too far.

As far as Romania is concerned, to achieve the main objectives, we must be mainly Romanian. We must be politicians, but be patriotic in Romania, when we relate to the major interests of our country. To be true Romanians in the promotion of our nation, to be Romanian above all by voting in Europe, to define together the objectives to be pursued and to all support with one voice in one language, the Romanian language.

Do not come to what has happened recently, when in the European Parliament, Romanians voted against Romania. We can not justify that. This is the strongest expression of our division. We must stop this war between the Romanians and the Romanians we have been leading for too long outside the country and in the interior of the country. I assure you, dear colleagues, that this is not what those who voted for us want. "Said Liviu Dragnea, at the Palace of Parliament.
