On November 30, the believers celebrate St. Apostle Andrew, the Christian of the Romanian nation, called "the first called", since he was responding to Christ's first call to the apostle, whereas it was also the national church festival.
The feast of St. Apostle Andrew (a name derived from the Greek word Andreas, which means "brave" or "masculine") also appears on November 30 in Orthodox calendars, Roman Catholic, Lutheran and Anglican. In Scotland, however, it appears on May 9 to recall the date of receipt of the relics of St. Andrew.
On the other hand, the night of St. Andrew is marked by certain prehistoric customs, traditions and superstitions, aimed at protecting men, as well as their homes and animals.
In the night of Saint-André, the border between the visible and the invisible disappears and the moment is conducive to certain prospecting practices of the future.
"Andrei the head of the winter" (as it is called in Bucovina) makes it possible to establish a link between the evil and the benefits, and the border between them disappears. Thus, in the night of St. Andrew, "the undead walk" to steal the "cow's hand", "the spirit of men" and "the fruit of orchards". The Strigoi are the spirits of the dead who, for various reasons, have not reached the kingdom beyond. That night, these spirits become dangerous, destructive, causing calamities, diseases and misfortune.
In these conditions, garlic is used to protect the household – the doors and windows of the house, the stables, the cages were crushed with crushed garlic to prevent evil spirits from enter or suspend garlic rings.
The garlic used in these defense practices was usually "wanted" a year before, even the night of St. Andrew. An "all-garlic" garlic ceremony involved the participation of girls and boys from the village who spent their time acquiring the qualities necessary for protection.
This garlic will be used throughout the year to treat various diseases as a means of protection against evil spirits, as well as to attract a possible life partner, the beast (after having, garlic has been sanctified in the church and kept in the icon).
To protect against the undead, bread crumbs are scattered in the yard – so that spirits do not enter the house after the meal – and the candles are lit by the icons. Pets are fed with holy basil and aggressive water. In addition, the salt strains descend, buried under the stable, to be discovered by St. George (April 23), used to feed the animals, as well as to protect them from evil spirits.
The evening of St. Andrew, you will see the wealth of orchards and fields. People bring home cherries, put them in the water and, if they bloom until Christmas, they will have a rich year. Another way is to sow wheat in small pots or use 12 onions (for the 12 months of the year) left in the attic until Christmas – the broken ones are a sign of the moon rainy, sprouts are a sign of wealth.
Girls who want to regain the skin of the beast under the sacred pillow in basil so that her face will appear in their dreams call the "face with the ulcus" for the help of a new clay pot, hot coals and magical incantations or at midnight. he looks in a glass of "unstable" water, resting on ashes, where he drops a sacred alliance. In some areas, it is thought that bears can be seen if the girl stays naked between two mirrors with a candle in her hand.
Paradoxically, this night can appeal to evil spirits to find the identity of thieves or criminals, or the place where things or people were lost. The three-day stand, the candles, the silver coins, the sanctified water, in a mortal setting, the village cemetery, are the elements used in this ritual practice that can only be practiced by strong minds.
On St. Andrew's night, wolves are thought to be beginning to talk, that they can move their throats, become more jagged, and that the people who hear them discover terrible secrets. But the payment is terrible, because these people will be attacked by the wolves and will become werewolves. Even animals are not safe from distress – the man does nothing in the household, so predators can not attack livestock. But they can also be protected by bees made from bee wax.
Until Christmas, women do not weave or flame so as not to fan the wrath of the Mother of God.
On the other hand, the night weather conditions of St. Andrew can predict what will be the winter, which will not be hard if it is clear and hot. Instead, a dark sky, a full moon, snow or rain are a sign of winter with great soldiers.
St. Andrew's Day marks the beginning of the winter holiday season, which will continue in St. Nicholas, celebrated on December 6, and will end on January 6 in Epiphany.
