According to a press release issued by the European Commission's Representation in Romania, Corina Creţu indicated at the meeting with Nicolae Hurduc the European Commission's concern about the blockade imposed on the implementation of the second phase of the Very Light Infrastructure Project – Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP). ) from Magurele and stresses the need to find a solution as soon as possible between the Romanian authorities and the contractor chosen by them, in order to guarantee the completion of the project during the 2014-2020 programming period.

The concern of the European Commission arose out of the dispute between the project beneficiary, the National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering "Horia Hulubei" (IFIN-HH) – and the European consortium EuroGammaS (EGS) , who must provide and install the system. of the gamma beam, based on a contract of 66 million euros, the statement said.
The infrastructure project for the Extreme Light – Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP), part of the pan-European research infrastructure, started during the 2007-2013 funding period and was is currently in the second phase of implementation. The total budget is approximately EUR 250 million, with funds provided under the Operational Program for Competitiveness. During the first phase of the project, a special building and an experimental building with laser and gamma beams were constructed. The second step is to build machines and equipment for a 10 PW laser beam and a gamma beam, as well as their installation.
