Amazon Comprehend Medical will use machine learning to read patient digital medical records and other clinical data, thus helping health professionals identify the key information contained in these records.
Amazon Web Services has sold similar text analysis software for travel booking, customer support, and supply chain management, according to the Wall Street Journal.
"The service will read the text and then identify and return the medical information it contains," Amazon said in a blog post. Machine learning is an aspect of artificial intelligence inspired from the human brain. Once you have a neural network with real data, machine learning can, for example, learn to explore a spam message, to transcribe words spoken in text messages or to recognize a cat.
While other algorithms have been hampered by unstructured medical text, Amazon software uses automatic learning to recognize the way doctors record their notes. Amazon said the software can extract data such as diagnosis, treatments and doses, among other key data.
The company also said that the software would better meet the requirements of confidentiality and health protection. "No processed service data is stored or used for training," Amazon said. The new software is the company's latest effort to enter the health sector, worth $ 3 billion.
Earlier this year, Amazon disbursed about $ 1 billion for PillPack, an online pharmacy that distributes prescription drugs to the United States in the form of packaged prescriptions and targets those who take more daily.
The company is not the only one in the field of technology to fight for a place in the lucrative health care industry. Apple is in talks with the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide veterans with mobile access to their electronic medical records.
