AUKA in Romania. Mobile payments in Romania: past, present and future

Auka, a Norwegian financial technology company, organized a conference on the future of mobile payments in Romania on July 12th.

The conference was moderated by Răzvan Enache, Wall-Street.ro, with the participation of 5 speakers: Daniel Döderlein CEO and founder of Auka Irina Nicoleta Scarlat 1969004] Country Manager, Revolut; George Anghel Executive Director, A.P.E.R.O. Kostas Tovil Senior Vice President, Financing Loans and Electronic Commerce, TBI Bank.

The conference focused on the mobile payments market in Romania and the main obstacles faced by banks and third parties to succeed in this area.

The topics discussed during the event were : the current stage of the mobile phone segment in Romania; the obstacles encountered by telecommunications companies, banks and third parties wishing to enter this market; significant disadvantages for Romanians in the adoption of these solutions; how the entry of third-party competitors in this market will affect the position of banks in the future

At the conference, Auka launched the report "Mobile Payments in Romania" which provides an analysis of influences and external factors that prepare the availability of the Romanian market for mobile payments and the similarities of the most successful products in the regions where they dominate.

If we refer to payments, Romania remains behind many neighbors of Europe, considering that most transactions are in the form of money.

Here are the most important results of the study:

  • More than half of the bank representatives surveyed (55%) said they had analyzed post-PSD2 monetization opportunities. On average, 12% of them said they did not analyze any of the monetization opportunities, but in Romania this percentage is higher, with 16% of respondents saying they did not evaluate opportunities to take advantage of this opportunity. [19659029] More than two-thirds (35%) will look into the possibility of obtaining and consolidating financial services to provide attractive new digital services. Romania ranks second, after the Czech Republic (where 37% reported adopting this strategy).

  • Fewer than one in five (19%) bankers in Romania reported having a program implementing mobile payments in the bank for the next year. In all the areas where the media survey was conducted for this answer, it was 22%.

  • 65% of respondents said they did not personally worry about the effects of PSD2 on the banks in which they work. This was the highest percentage for the sample; 58% of bankers in the rest of Europe have not been worried. However, 37% felt that their workplace should adapt or change significantly. This is the second important recognition of the need for change in the regions studied – in Estonia the percentage was highest
