Norwegian Magnus Carlsen (photo left) won the world chess championship ahead of Fabiano Caruna on Wednesday.

Carlsen was forced to play in the playoffs three fasts after the score was equal after the 12 regular games. It was a 51-shot match.

For the third time, Carlsen defends his world title after an aggressive play in the playoffs, where he preferred not to move to save the table.

For the first time after winning the first world title in 2013, Carlsen won without losing any match of any kind.

Magnus Carlsen won the world title in 2013, and then defended it three times in 2014, 2016 and now in 2018.

The final with challenger Caruna lasted three weeks and Carlsen ended his dream of becoming the first American chess world champion to Bobby Fischer in 1972.

"Caruna is without a doubt the most powerful opponent I've ever met," Carlsen said on Norwegian national television, NRK TV.
