The NATO Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security, Clare Hutchinson, who is attending the Women's Forum in the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik, said Wednesday in an interview with the agency Spanish EFE that the Alliance was already working on a code-driven to prevent abuse and sexual exploitation during missions.
She pointed out that work was under way to implement the conclusions on gender equality policy at the last NATO summit. Asked about her work as an activist for gender equality in a predominantly male organization, Clare Hutchinson responded that "it's not easy, just as it's not easy to maintain the gender perspective elsewhere ".
She congratulated NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on her gender equality priorities, but lamented the fact that the end of the inequality between women and men the sexes is still considered the last thing to do. Regarding the absence of women as Secretary General of NATO or other organizations such as the European Union or the UN, Clare Hutchinson said she would appreciate if a woman could soon access a position, but this would not automatically mean that gender equality policies are respected in these organizations.
"We need women in power, female women who understand the importance of going forward," said Clare Hutchinson, who, before working for NATO, was occupying the post of UN general adviser for gender policy for the past ten years.
