Senator Mitt Romney, who was a thorn in President Trump's foot, said Sunday that Democrats' calls for the president to release his tax returns were "fools".
"I'd like the president to follow along and show his tax returns," Romney, R-Utah, told the NBC News "Meet the Press" series. "But, I also have to tell you that the Democrats are just playing along with his handbook, which deals with his tax returns through legislative action, it's stupid, it's not going to happen."
"So he will win this win," added Romney. "He wins them every time."

Welsh House Committee on Ways and Means, Richard Neal, D-Mass., Asked the IRS last week to provide six years of personal income tax returns from Trump and some of his activities.
Neal, one of only three congressional representatives allowed to file tax returns, asked Trump to share his personal and professional information in a letter to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig. He requested returns covering the period from 2013 to 2018. He also requested the documents within seven days, setting a deadline of 10 April.
Trump's lawyers claimed that the Democratic Party's demand would "create a dangerous precedent" if it were accepted.
Trump broke with the precedent by choosing not to publish any tax return as a presidential candidate. He said he would not disclose the information as he is currently undergoing an audit, which he repeated last Friday during his visit to the US-Mexico border.
"I am under audit. When you're under audit, you do not do it, "said Trump.
Officials at the IRS have stated that the taxpayers audited are free to publish their statements.
White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney on Sunday reiterated Trump's point of view and accused the Democrats of getting into a "political coup" and wanting "attention."
"It will not happen and they know it," Mulvaney told Fox News Sunday. Asked to know he thought the Democrats will never see the president return, Mulvaney replied, "Oh no, never, they should not either.

Mulvaney tried to make the president's taxes issue an old piece of information, saying the case had "already been litigated in the elections" and that the American people "had elected him anyway".
He also stated that the law provided for legislators to examine personal income tax returns, but that "political success" is not one of those reasons.
