DALLAS – On almost every tee and green Thursday, Tony Romo was greeted with shouts of encouragement during AT & T's first tour of Byron Nelson at Trinity Forest Golf Club.
Whether it was good or bad, the fans were as invested in Romo as during his ten year career as a quarterback to the Dallas Cowboys.
"It was fantastic," said Romo, who participates in the event with a sponsor waiver. "It was really nice, I could feel the energy and just feel it pull for you, that made me feel good inside."
In the end, Romo did not have the sleeve he wanted, nor that of the fans, finishing with a 5-over 76 that left him tied for the 148th place, but he had moments that aroused some of the most strong cheers of the tournament.
Denny McCarthy leads Nelson after a 63, followed by Tyler Duncan and Tom Hoge at 64, but Romo was one of the star players of the day, which is why he got the exemption.
As he headed for the first T-shirt, fans shouted his name. As he walked down the aisles, Romo waved his hand or gave a thumbs up to those who encouraged him. Romo followed the eagle with an impressive back-and-forth to save the normal No. 8, but his run quickly turned to the ninth 505-yard, normal-4 hole, when he improperly hung his tee shot in the woods, leading to a double bogey.
He made another double bogey on number 13 when his starting ball crossed the fairway to reach the tall native grasses. He made bogeys on numbers 14, 15 and 17 mainly because of weak shots at the start. He hit only six of the 14 fairways and only eight of the 18 greens in regulation.
In the morning, the temperatures were warm and the wind was minimal, but in the afternoon, temperatures dropped and the north wind made the route more difficult.
"A few of these tee shots really cost me just because they're criminal in those areas," Romo said. "You can not miss them here." The separation between these guys is the ability to do it for long periods of time, and I think a few shots cost me the trick.
It was better than Romo did in March at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship. He finished 15 times for the second consecutive year on the PGA Tour, but he was disappointed with his day as he played many innings at Trinity Forest. , where he is a member.
"I thought I was going to drive a lot better than me," Romo said. Romo's father, Ramiro, was among the gallery throughout the tour. Watching his son play quarterback was more difficult for him and his wife, Joan, he said, because of the "injury factor". The feeling on the golf course is different.

After his tour, Romo headed for the driving range in dim light.
