Rory McIlroy has won the PGA Tour Player of the Year award for the third time, officials said on Wednesday.

McIlroy defeated Brooks Koepka, Matt Kuchar and Xander Schauffele by voting for the Jack Nicklaus Award, which he also won in 2012 and 2014.

Although McIlroy had three wins in the 2018-1919 season, including 2 net wins at the Players and Tour championship, Koepka was considered to be the lead rider for the trophy thanks to his major tournament qualifications.

Koepka became the fifth player to rank in the top five of the four major tournaments in one season with his PGA Championship win, second place at the Masters and Open US, and tied for fourth at the Open.

Who better than Jack Nicklaus can give you the Jack Nicklaus Award?

"Brooks has had an amazing year, three amazing years, really," said McIlroy. "I think [the player vote] says a lot about what PGA Tour players feel [is] important. The players do not think that four weeks are important. We play more than the story suggests.

The tour does not disclose the total votes for the player of the year award and even McIlroy did not get the percentages when he asked for it. "They have tight lips," he said.

By virtue of his victory at East Lake, McIlroy won the FedExCup, finishing his season with 14 top-10 finishes, only two out of 19 starts.

"I wanted to try my best every week that I played," he said. "The top 10, the consistency, the work I've done – the biggest compliment you can receive is that your peers think you've accomplished something special enough."
