The Russian public corporation Russian Space Systems presented the concept and features of its latest development: a satellite capable of devouring the remains of its kind littering the Earth's orbit. During a full operating cycle, the satellite can recycle up to 500 kilograms of space debris, the developers said. In addition, it will use recycled waste as an operational fuel.
The 2.5-ton satellite will be sent to lower orbits at a height of about 400 kilometers, where it will find its first prey, grab it with a two-part titan net, compress it and crush it. in dust. The latter will be mixed in a so-called pseudo-liquid fuel using oxygen and hydrogen, which will be generated by the satellite itself with the help of a processor that regenerates the water.
As satellite inventor Maria Barkova says, her invention will essentially act as a "predator" of space – feeding on other satellites to go further into higher and more congested orbits. This will reduce deployment costs because it will not be necessary to send additional steps to a lower orbit.
